Assessing Approaches to Learning Statistics of Indonesian Pre-service Teachers

XML

Abstract
Statistics knowledge for pre-service teachers will
be applied as a tool rather than a central skill in their future
profession. However, they need to develop mature approaches to
learning the course as the preparation for lifelong learning due to
the evolving nature of statistics. This article reports on the
development of a pilot version of approaches to learning statistics
questionnaire. The item scales of questionnaire were developed
based upon the students’ statements found from the previous
phenomenographic study, which represented surface, achieving,
and deep approaches to learning statistics. Subsequently, an
exploratory factor analyses involving 56 participants were
executed which suggested a three-factor structure to best fit with
the data. Evidence was found supporting both validity and
reliability of the scales. The result of this study is a 22-item pilot
version of questionnaire which will be further administered to
the larger group of students to validate the questionnaire which
can provide empirical structure of students’ approaches to
learning statistics. Implications for statistics teaching and
suggestions for further research are discussed
