AN ANALYSIS OF STUDENTS’ DIFFICULTIES IN ANSWERING STRUCTURE AND WRITTEN EXPRESSION IN TOEFL ENCOUNTERED BY ENGLISH DEPARTMENT STUDENTS OF IAIN LHOKSEUMAWE (A Case study at IAIN Lhokseumawe of Eight Semester)

This research was entitled An Analysis of Students’ Difficulties in
Answering Structure and Written Expression in TOEFL Encountered by
English Department Students of IAIN. The objectives of this research was
(1) To identify kinds of difficulties in structure and written expression section
faced by English Department Education students of IAIN Lhokseumawe, and
(2) To analyze the factor influencing the difficulty faced by English
Department Education students of IAIN Lhokseumawe in answering Structure
and Written Expression section in TOEFL. This research used qualitative
approach in type of case study research. The instruments of this research are
TOEFL score, questionnaire, and interview. The researcher took 10 students
who took a TOEFL test of eight semester students as a respondent. The results
of this research show that most English Departement students have test result
were no more than a standard, and they did not reach the standard score. Even,
once, twice and three time they taken and finally got standard minimum score.
The English departement students have difficulty in the structure and written
expression test such as Sentences with one clause, Sentences with multiple
clauses, Sentences with reduced clauses, parallel structure, comparatives and
superlatives sentences, and in using articles.
