THE EFFECTIVENESS OF USING PATTERN PRACTICE METHOD IN TEACHING READING COMPREHENSION (An Experimental Research on Tenth Grade Students of MAN 1 Lhokseumawe)

This thesis entitled “The Effectiveness of Using Pattern Practice Method in
Teaching Reading Comprehension”. An Eperimental Research on Tenth Grade
Students of MAN 1 Lhokseumawe.Based on the observation that had done by the
reseacher in MAN 1 Lhokseumawe the students faced a lot of problems in reading
comprehension, especially in Narrative text such as; the students could not answer
the question well when they did an exercise of reading a text, the students could
not get main ideas from the text when they read, The teacher less method so the
students fell bored in learning reading comprehension. The researcher had
formulated the problem of the research “is there any significant effect in
achievement between the students who are taught Pattern Practice Method from
those are taught Reading Comprehension by Using Conventional Method?”. The
purpose of this research is to know whether there is significant effect in
achievement between the students who are taught reading comprehension by
using Pattern Practice Method from those who are taught reading comprehension
by using Conventional Method. The design of this research will be used
experimental research by using quantitative data approach. In this research, the
sample was taken by using lottery. The writer took two classes as the samples,
those are class X MIA-2 and X MIA-5.The sample of this research is 42 students,
21 students in the class X MIA-2 as experimental group and 21 students in the
class X MIA-5 as control group. In the experimental group, the writer used
Pattern Practice Method in teaching reading comprehension, meanwhile in the
control group use Conventional Method in teaching reading comprehension.
Before teaching learning process the writer gave pre-test, and after teaching
learning process for three meetings the writer gave post-test to the students. The
researcher needed to find out the tcount and ttable. Based on the result that had
counted, the tcount is 2,7167. Then based on the value in level significant 0,05 of
degree of freedom df = 40, finding the ttable.is 1,7207. So, the tcount > ttable =
2,7167 > 1,7207. Meanwhile, as criteria of hypothesis, if tcount > ttable , hence H0
is rejected and Ha is accepted. The score was obtained from result of calculating,
2,7167 > 1,7207, the alternative hypothesis is accepted and null hypothesis is
rejected. In other words, the researcher hypothesis is accepted. It means that there
is any effectiveness of using Pattern Practice Method in teaching reading
comprehension at MAN 1 Lhokseumawe.
