The title of this thesis is “Improving students’ Reading Comprehension by Using
Annotation” ( A Collaborative classroom Action Research at SMA 3
Lhokseumawe ) the students had problems in comprehending reading text, they
faced difficulty to understand reeading text, they are complained about how to
translate the word, therefore the writer use annotation to improve their reading
comprehension especially in narrative text, because the strategy emphasized the
student more active to find some difficult word and phrase. The pupose of the
research were to see whether annotation could improve students reading
comprehension in narrative story and to see the students and teacher’s activity in
the class while the strategy applied. The subject of this research were all of
students second year SMA 3 Lhokseumawe. This research applied qualitative
approach in the form of action reasearch. In this research the writer did
collaborative type, the writer and collaborator work together. In achieving the
research the writer used classroom action research procedure involved five step,
there are : preliminary study, planning, implementing, observing, and reflexing.
To collect data the writer applied some instrument such as observation checklist to
the teacher and students, test and field note there were two cycle in this research
in which its cycle was conducted in two meetings. The finding of the research that
increase the students ability in reading was proved by result obtained from the test
and observation data. The result of pre-test of cycle one was 37,33 not reached
KKM score, the score of post-test was 62,13, and the second cycle the score of
post-test was 87,66 reached KKM score. The students’ score was getting better
each cycle, it showed that teaching reading comprhension by using annotation was
succesfull.
