AN ANALYSIS OF STUDENTS’ DIFFICULTIES IN USING PUNCTUATION (A Case Study at the Eighth Grade Students of SMP Negeri 2 Lhokseumawe)

This Thesis was entitled “An Analysis of Students’ Difficulties In using Punctuation
(A Case Study at the Eight Grade Students of SMP N 2 Lhokseumawe).” This
research was conducted based on the fact that most students still have many
difficulties in using punctuation. Punctuations are very essential to be mastered by
students, referring to curriculum. However, was found that the students in SMP N 2
Lhokseumawe could not master punctuation well because did not understand the
exact placement of punctuation. Therefore the purposes of this research were (1) to
find out kinds of difficulties faced by students in using punctuation. (2) to find out the
causes of difficulties made by the students in using punctuation. The design applied
in this research was qualitative in type of case study. Meanwhile, the techniques of
data collection were documentation and interview. Seven were chosen as subject of
research by purposive sampling. The technique of analyzing data of this research
consisted of data condensation, data display, and conclusion/verification. The results
of this research showed that (1) there were three kinds of difficulties made by the
eighth grade students, namely: period, comma, and apostrophe. The highest
percentage was comma difficulties which (9,17%) and lowest percentage was
apostrophe difficulties which (1,95%). was also found that (2) those difficulties
occurred because of cause motivation, self-efficacy, and school teacher.
