This thesis entitled “The Application of Using Narrative Video as A Media in
Teaching Listening Comprehension (A Quasi Experimental Research on the
Eighth Grade Students of SMPN 10 Lhokseumawe)”. English listening skill is
very important to be mastered because it has important role for human life. It is
the complex process that allows people to understand the spoken language.
Successful communication depends on not only receiving messages but also
decoding them correctly. In fact, most of students could not understand for what
they have listened. They also could not response to what their teacher asked
because they did not know what had been asked. Besides, the technique and
media used by teacher in class was monotonous so that the students felt bored in
joining the listening activities. Therefore, the researcher was interested in testing
the use of narrative video as media in teaching listening. The purpose of this
research was to know whether narrative video as media significantly affect the
students’ ability in mastering listening or not. In conducting the research, the
researcher used quantitative approach, and the kind of this research was quasi
experimental research. This research was conducted in SMPN 10 Lhokseumawe.
The population of this research was all students of the eighth grade students of
SMPN 10 Lhokseumawe. The samples of this research consist of two classes that
was taken using simple random sampling technique, those are: class VIII1 that
consist of 25 students was chosen as experimental group and class VIII2 that
consist of 25 students was chosen as control group. The total number of the
samples were 50 students. The instrument used to collect the data was test. The
test were pre-test and post-test. The data was analyzed by using t-test formula.
The result of the research showed that the score of t-test was 2.99 while the score
of t-table with the significance level at 0.05 and df = 48 was 1.67. It meant that ttest
was higher than t-table that was 2.99 > 1.67. Based on criteria of hypothesis,
the researcher concluded that the alternative hypothesis (Ha) of this research was
accepted and the null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected. It meant that narrative video
as media significantly affects the students’ ability in mastering listening.
