ABSTRACT
This thesis entitled “Teachers’ Strategy in Teaching Writing (A Descriptive
Qualitative Research on the Eighth Grade Students of SMPN 6 Baktiya)”. Writing
is one of the four language skills that should be mastered by the students who are
learning a certain language especially English. To help the students easy in
mastering writing, the teacher should be able to use appropriate strategy that
engages the students actively in writing activities. The purposes of the research
were to know the kind of strategies used by the teacher in teaching writing and
why they choose those strategies in teaching writing. This research was conducted
at SMPN 6 Baktiya using descriptive qualitative approach. Descriptive qualitative
is the kind of the research used to analyze and describe the social fact, man’s
engineering, and natural phenomena. The subject of the research was two teachers
from the eighth grade. The technique of collecting data in this research was
through observation and interview. Meanwhile, the technique of analyzing the
data was using inductive method which consist of three steps namely data
reduction, data display, and data verification. The result of this research showed
that there were three strategies frequently used by the teachers in teaching writing.
Those strategies were cooperative learning, expository, and contextual teaching
and learning strategy. Cooperative learning strategy was used when the teacher
asked the students to sit and learn in group, asked to write the narrative text in
group, and also gave opportunity for the students to discuss the topic of narrative
text in their group. Furthermore, expository strategy was used when the teachers
explained about narrative verbally to the students by writing it on the white board.
Meanwhile, contextual teaching and learning strategy was used when the teachers
related the topic of narrative text with the students’ real life. Those strategies were
used to make the students easier in understanding the lesson. Cooperative learning
strategy was used to make the students easy in writing process because they could
cooperate each others in finishing the task given by the teachers. Furthermore,
expository strategy was used to make the students really understood about the
explanation of narrative text. Meanwhile, contextual teaching and learning
strategy was used to make the students easy in gathering the ideas to be written.
