AN ANALYSIS ON THE STUDENTS’ ERRORS IN PRONOUNCING VOWEL SOUNDS

The title of this thesis is “An Analysis On The Student’s Competence In
Pronouncing Short And Long Vowel Sounds (A Case Study to the Second Year
Students of SMP Negeri 1 Lapang)”. Pronunciation is important in English
because mispronunciations will make hearer misunderstand about the meaning of
utterance. Pronunciation is clearly a central factor in people’s success in making
themselves understood. Many cases of misunderstanding in communication were
caused by mispronouncing of some words or improper intonation of the words.
The problem of the research are what kind of error made the students in
pronouncing vowel sounds and what causes the errors of students in pronouncing
vowel sounds. The purposes of this research are to know what kind of error made
the students in pronouncing vowel sounds and to know the causes the errors of
students in pronouncing vowel sounds. This research is qualitative research. The population of this research was all of the classes from the second
grade students of MTsS Darul Ulum. The researcher took two classes as the
samples. The VII2 were chosen as experimental group, while VII3 was as control
group. Sample from experimental group consist of 25 students and control group
consist of 25 students. So the total number of the sample was 50 students. The
data was collected by given test, there are pre-test and post-test and then analyzed
with used statistical formula t-test the hypothesisi. The researcher gave pre-test in
the first meeting ang gave post-test in the last meeting. The treatment was
conducted four meetings. In the experimental group, the researcher gave treatment
by using spelling bee game. While, in control group the researcher only used
convensional method. The result from analyzed the data it was shown that there
were a significant different between the experimental and countrol group. The
score of experimental was higher than control group. The students score was
analyzed by using t-test formula. Based on the research result, it was obtained that
ttest > ttable as 4,4507 > 1,6788. So, ttest score was higher than the critical value of
table, it means that the research hypothesis (Ha) was accepted, while null
hypothesis (Ho) was rejected. As a result the researcher concluded that using
Spelling Bee Game in teaching vocabulary at the Seventh Grade Students at
MTsS Darul Ulum was effective.
