STUDENTS’ PERCEPTION OF THE TOEFL TEST AS THESIS EXAMINATION REQUIREMENT (A Case Study at IAIN Lhokseumawe)
XMLThis thesis is entitled “Students’ Perception of the TOEFL Test as a Thesis
Examination Requirement (A case study at IAIN Lhokseumawe)”. TOEFL is a
proficiency test which is used to measure someone’s ability to use and understand
English at the university level and it evaluates how well someone combines its
listening, reading, speaking, and writing skill to perform academic tasks. IAIN
Lhokseumawe has decided some types of testing for undergraduate students to exit
from universities as requirement for graduation. One of the types of language testing
is the TOEFL test. Students might have various perceptions about TOEFL test as
thesis examination requirement. Based on the background, the purpose of this
research were in order to find out what is Students’ Perception of the TOEFL Test as
Thesis Examination Requirement at IAIN Lhokseumawe. The design applied in this
research was qualitative data approach in type of case study. Meanwhile the
technique in analyzing data of this research was Miles and Huberman’s model, which
consisted of data collection, data display and conclusion verification. The result of
this research in students’ perception of the TOEFL test as thesis examination
requirement was the Students perceive that the TOEFL test is very important in the
academic aspects. Either to they who consider that TOEFL is the way to be able
taking thesis examination or to they who consider the TOEFL is needed in every
aspect of life, such as education, scholarship, occupation and so on. They even
challenging their self to increase their score much better that before, because they
have huge interest in TOEFL test. No one was complaining about the TOEFL as a
thesis examination requirement. All of them receive TOEFL as a condition of the
thesis examination. Even they have to try three times to pass the test. The students
needed the support from lecturers and campus because the subject introduction to
TOEFL in seventh semester does not have more impact, so students must learn on
their own.
