THE EFFECTIVENESS OF USING TOTAL PHYSICAL RESPONSE (TPR) METHOD IN VOCABULARY MASTERY

This thesis is entitled “The Effectiveness of Using Total Physical Response (TPR)
Method in Vocabulary Mastery(A Quasi Experimental Research at the Seventh
Grade Students of MTsN Nibong)”. Based on observation that had done by the
researcher in MTsN Nibong, especially at the seventh grade, few of students can
comprehend or can understand what they have proficiency especially vocabulary
knowledge, the students felt difficult to memorize the vocabulary caused low
motivation and not interested in learning vocabulary, the teacher less method in
learning vocabulary and also the school have lack of facilities. The problem of
this research was “Is there any significant effect in achievement between the
students who are taught vocabulary mastery by using total physical response
method?” The purpose of this research was to find out whether there is significant
effect in achievement between the students who are taught vocabulary mastery by
using total physical response method from those who are taught by using
conventional method. The design of this research was quasi experimental study
with quantitative approach. The total population of this research are 103 students.
The samples of this research were two classes of the seventh grade students of
MTsN Nibong. The samples were determined by using simple random sampling
technique and chosen by using lottery.The samples of this research is 50 students.
They were class VII-1 as experimental group that consisted of 25 students and
class VII-2 as control group that consisted of 25 students. In the experimental
group the researcher used Total Physical Response Method in teaching vocabulary
mastery, while control group the reseacher used conventional method. Before
teaching learning process the writer gave pre-test, and after teaching learning
process for three meetings the writer gave post-test to the students. The researcher
used test as data collection technique. There were twenty questions in multiple
choice about vocabulary. Based on the result and the hypothesis authentication
and by using t-test is 2,41, then based on the value in level significant level α =
0,05 of degree of freedom df = 48, finding the ttable, is 1,67. So, the ttest > ttable, it
was 2,41 > 1,67. Meanwhile, as criteria of hypothesis, if ttest > ttable, hence Ho is
rejected and Ha was accepted. The score was obtained from result of calculating,
2.41> 1.67, the alternative hypothesis was accepted and null hypothesis is
rejected. In other words, the researcher hypothesis is accepted. It means that there
was any effectiveness of using Total Physical Response Method in vocabulary
mastery at MTsN Nibong.
