The title of this thesis is “Improving Students’ Vocabulary Mastery Through
Crossword Puzzle Game ( A Collaborative Classroom Action Research at the
Second Year Students of SMPN 9 Lhokseumawe)”. Most of the students are
difficult in memorizing the vocabularies which has been learn before the students
did not know the vocabularies that often use in their daily life. The purposes of
this research were: To know how Crossword Puzzle game improve students’
vocabulary mastery and to know the class atmosphere when crossword puzzle
game is implemented in learning vocabulary. The study belongs to collaborative
action research in which the researcher and the teacher work together in this
action. The subject in this research were all students of class VIII2
(24 students) of
SMPN 9 Lhokseumawe. The research was conducted in two cycle by following
the procedures of the research. It began with the planning, implementing,
observing, analyzing and reflecting. To collect the data, the researcher used some
instruments such as observation checklist for teacher, observation guide for
students, pre-test and post-test. They were given 20 multiple choice questions. In
the first cycle the score of pre-test was 53,54% ,the score of post-test was 63,95%
and in the second cycle the score of post-test was 79,16%. It means that the result
had met the criteria of success. Crossword puzzle game concluded that could
improve the students’ ability in mastering vocabulary. Therefore, learning
vocabulary had successfully improved class atmosphere by applying crossword
puzzle game the class atmosphere was very happy, because learning vocabulary
through crossword puzzle game makes the students having fun and not bored,
make enthusiastic situation and students become easier in memorizing the words.
