THE EFFECTIVENESS OF USING GUIDED IMAGERY STRATEGY IN TEACHING READING COMPREHENSION (A Quasi Experimental Research on the Eighth Grade Students of SMPN 2 Syamtalira Aron)
XMLThis thesis entitled “The Effectiveness of Using Guided Imagery Strategy in
Teaching Reading Comprehension (A Quasi Experimental Research on the Eighth
Grade Students of SMPN 2 Syamtalira Aron)”. Reading comprehension is one of
the four language skills should be mastered when studying English. In fact, most
of the eighth grade students did not master the reading comprehension especially
about narrative text. Most of them were difficult in finding the main ideas of the
narrative text so that they were hard to understand the meaning of the text. The
problem of this research “Is there any significant difference in achievement
between the students who are taught reading comprehension by using guided
imagery strategy from those who are taught by using conventional method”. The
purpose of this research was to know whether there is any significant difference in
achievement between the students who are taught reading comprehension by
using guided imagery strategy from those who are taught by using conventional
method. This research was quasi experimental design. The population of the
research was all of the eighth grade students of SMPN 2 Syamtalira Aron that
were 74 students. In this research, the samples were determined by using simple
random sampling technique and chosen by using lottery. The researcher wrote the
name of each class on each paper and then took two papers to be used as the
sample. The first paper taken was used as experimental class and the second paper
taken was used as control class. Class VIII

that consist of 25 students was chosen
as experimental group and class VIII2
consist of 25 students was chosen as control
group. The total number of the samples was 50 students. The instrument used to
collect the data was test. The test were pre-test and post-test. The researcher gave
pre-test before giving treatment and post-test after giving treatment. The treatment
was conducted in three meetings. The data was analyzed by using t-test formula.
The researcher found that the score of t-test was 2.51, while the score of t-table
on significance level 0.05 and df=48 was 1.67. It meant that t-test was higher than
t-table that is 2.51 > 1.67. So, based on the criterion, the researcher concluded that
the alternative hypothesis (Ha) of this research was accepted and the null
hypothesis (Ho) was rejected.
