THE EFFECTIVENESS OF USING THINK PAIR SHARE STRATEGY IN TEACHING READING COMPREHENSION (An Experimental Research at the Tenth Students of SMAN 1 Syamtalira Aron)

This thesis entitled “The Effectiveness of Using Think Pair Share Strategy in
Teaching Reading Comprehension (An Experimental Research at the Tenth
Students of SMAN 1 Syamtalira Aron )”. Reading is an important skill to get a
lot information. It is facilitates the students to learn the other skills. The aim of
reading is to get the meaning or message of a text and have to be able to
comprehend text during process of learning in the classroom. In fact, many
students still had some difficulties in mastering reading. As a result this problem
happened to the tenth students of SMAN 1 Syamtalira Aron. The problem of this
research “Is there any significant effect in achievement between the students who
are taught reading comprehension by using Think Pair Share Strategy from those
are taught by using Conventional Method”. Therefore the research only focused
on teaching reading narrative text. The purpose of this research was to find out
whether there is any significant effect in achievement between the students who
are taught reading comprehension by Using Think Pair Share Strategy from those
who are taught by using Conventional Method. The design of this research was
quasi experimental study with quantitative approach. The population of this
research was at the tenth students of SMAN 1 Syamtalira Aron. In this research
the researcher took two classes as the samples by using simple random sampling.
The sample of this research were 60 students, 30 students in the class X/1 as
experimental class and 30 students in the class X/2 as control class. The
instrument used to collect the data was test. The researcher gave the students pretest and after the four meetings the researcher gave post-test to both groups. The
data was analyzed by using t-test formula. The researcher found that the score of
t-test was 2,20 while the score of t-table on significance level 0,05 and df = 58
was 1,6715. It meant that t-test was higher than t-table that is 2,20 > 1,6715. So,
based on the criterion the researcher concluded that the alternative hypothesis (Ha)
of this research was accepted and the null hypothesis (H0) was rejected. It meant
that using Think Pair Share Strategy in teaching reading comprehension at the
tenth students of SMAN 1 Syamtalira Aron was effective.
