The title of this thesis is “The Correlation between Students’ Ability in Mastering Grammar and the
Speaking Ability” at English Department of IAIN Lhokseumawe. Grammar is really important both in
written or spoken. By matering a good grammar, they are able to construct good meaning perception
of message received in their mind, and express the ideas that are built from the mind perception in
oral speech. Here the researcher formulated the problem were: is there any significant correlation
between students’ ability in mastering grammar and their ability in speaking English at English
Department of IAIN Lhokseumawe. The objective of this research is to know the correlation between
students’ ability in mastering grammar and their ability in speaking English at English Department of
IAIN Lhokseumawe. The design of this research in quantitative approach by correlational design. The
data collection of this research is by giving the test both grammar mastery and speaking ability. They
were given 3 kinds of grammar tests, 20 questions for multiple choice 3 score every point, 10
questions 2 score every point, 10 for error recognizing 2 score every point, and 1 test for speaking that
is short talk that according to scoring system of J.B. Heaton. The data was analyzed by using r
pearson formula. Based on the calculation of r pearson found that r-score was 0.701892, it meant that
correlation coefficient was high correlation and had significant correlation that reflected a true
relationship in degree relationship. It proved by referencing to enterpretation table for correlation
coefficient. Based on hypothesis authentication of t-table that found t-score was 6.7 and t-table was
2.04, it meant that t-score>t-table, it certainly meant that Ha was accepted while Ho was rejected. It
had a significant correlation between students’ ability in mastering grammar and their ability in
speaking English at English Department of IAIN Lhokseumawe.
