This thesis entitled “Teaching Reading Comprehension by Using Reciprocal
Teaching Strategy (A Quasi Experimental Research on the Eighth Grade Students
of MTsN 4 Aceh Utara)”. Reading plays an important role in language learning
because it gives the input of information, knowledge, and idea to be applied in the
speaking and writing. In fact, the students’ ability in mastering reading
comprehension was low. Most of them could not comprehend the meaning of the
English text that was being read. They could not get idea and understand the
meaning of the text. Therefore, the researcher used reciprocal teaching strategy to
help the students in mastering reading comprehension. The purpose of this
research was to know whether reciprocal teaching strategy significantly affect the
students’ ability in mastering reading comprehension or not. This research was
conducted in MTsN 4 Aceh Utara and it was conducted in quasi experimental
design. The population of the research was all of the eighth grade students of
MTsN 4 Aceh Utara. In this research, the samples were determined by using
simple random sampling technique and chosen by using lottery. The researcher
wrote the name of each class on each paper and then took two papers to be used as
the sample. The first paper taken was used as experimental class and the second
paper taken was used as control class. Class VIII1
that consist of 25 students was
chosen as experimental group and class VIII3
consist of 25 students was chosen as
control group. The total number of the samples was 50 students. The instrument
used to collect the data was test. The test were pre-test and post-test. The
researcher gave pre-test before giving treatment and post-test after giving
treatment. The treatment was conducted in three meetings. The data was analyzed
by using t-test formula. The researcher found that the score of t-test was 3.89,
while the score of t-table on significance level 0.05 and df=48 was 1.67. It meant
that t-test was higher than t-table that is 3.89 > 1.67. So, based on the criterion, the
researcher concluded that the alternative hypothesis (Ha) of this research was
accepted and the null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected. Therefore, it could be said
that reciprocal teaching strategy significantly affected the students’ ability in
mastering reading comprehension.
