THE EFFECTIVENESS OF WHOLE BRAIN TEACHING MODEL IN TEACHING WRITING NARRATIVE TEXT (An Experimental Research on the Eight Grade of SMPN 3 Meurah Mulia)

The thesis entitled “The Effectiveness of Whole Brain Teaching in Teaching Writing
Narrative Text (An Experimental Research at SMPN 3 Meurah Mulia)”. Writing is a
way of communication in which communicator apply they written languages. It is also a
process of transforming ideas, thought in spoken or written to have the reader understand
what he or she reads. In fact, most of the eight grade students of SMPN 3 Meurah Mulia
could not produce a good writing paragraph and difficult in gathering their ideas in a
sequence of sentences chronologically and coherently. Besides, the teacher did not use
various teaching model in teaching learning process especially in teaching writing. Then, the
students score in writing practice was very low and did not meet the criteria of success. The
aim of this research was to know any significant difference in writing achievement between
the students who were taught by using whole brain teaching model from those who were
taught by using conventional method. The design applied in this research was quantitative
research in type of experimental research. The population of the research was the eighth
grade students of SMPN 3 Meurah Mulia. Fourty two students were taken Randomly (SRS)
as the sample in this research. There were two classes as the sample, those are: VIII1 as the
experimental class consists of 21 students and VIII3 as the control class consists of 21
students. The source of the data was the pre-test and post-test from experiment and control
classes. Furthermore, the research applied the whole brain teaching model in the research
class. As the result, the researcher found that the mean score of pre-test of experimental
group was 49.61 and the mean score of pre-test of control group was 46.57. After the
research gave treatment of the class, the mean score of post-test of experimental group
became 60.04 while the control group became 52.61. It means that the score was higher after
the researcher gave treatment than before treatment. Hypothesis authentication found by
using Ttest shows that the significant level 5% ɑ= 0.05, it was obtained that ttest > ttable (Table
of t Value), that is 1.97 > 1.68 and df = 40. So, based criterion, the research concluded that
the alternative hypothesis (Ha) of this research was accepted and the null hypothesis (H0) was
rejected. It means that using whole brain teaching model in teaching writing narrative text of
SMPN 3 Meurah Mulia was effective.
