THE EFFECTIVENESS OF USING NEWS STORIES IN TEACHING READING COMPREHENSION THROUGH SYNTHESIZING STRATEGY
XMLThis thesis entitled “The Effectiveness of Using News Stories in Teaching
Reading Comprehension Through Synthesizing Strategy”. (A Quasi
Experimental Research on the second year Students of SMAN 5 Lhokseumawe). Based on the observation that had done by the researcher in SMAN 5
Lhokseumawe the students faced a lot of problems in reading comprehension,
especially in Report text such as; the students were less interesting in learning
reading, so the students were less motivated in learning reading, the students’ difficulties in learning use to increase students to comprehend reading. The
purpose of this research was to know whether there were significant effect of
students who were using News Stories to Students’ Reading Comprehension
Ability Through Synthesizing Strategy. This research was experimental research
with used quasi-experimental design. The population of this research was all of
the eleven grade students of SMKN 5 Lhokseumawe. The researcher took XIA
and XIE at the class of the school as the sample. From the process of lottery
technique, the researcher determined class XIE as the control group and class XIA
as the experimental group. They were 22 students from experiment group, and 21
students from control group. In the experimental group, the writer used news
stories teaching reading comprehension through synthesizing strategy, while in
the control group used Conventional Method in teaching reading comprehension.
Before giving treatment, the writer gave pre-test, and after giving treatment for
three meetings the writer gave post-test to the students. researcher found out the
ttest = 3,283 and and the value of ttable in significant 0,05 based on score of df =
41, ttable = 2,021. So, tcount >ttable, = 3,283 >2,021 the ttest was higher than ttable. It
means that the H0 hypothesis was rejected and Ha was accepted. In other words, it
could be conclude that there was any effectiveness of using news stories through
synthesizing strategy in teaching reading comprehension at second years Students
of SMAN 5 Lhokseumawe.
