This thesis entitle “The Effectiveness of Using Selective Highlighting Strategy in
Teaching Reading Comprehension (A Quasi Experimental Research atthe Seventh
Grade Students of SMPN 11Lhokseumawe)”. The students at the seventh grade of
SMPN 11 Lhokseumawe found some difficultiesto comprehend the text when
learning reading comprehension, got bored in reading class and mostly focused on
translation. The problem of this research “is Selective Highlighting Strategy
effective in teaching reading comprehension at The Seventh Grade Students of
SMP N 11Lhokseumawe?”. The purpose of this research was to find out whether
or not Selective Highlighting Strategy effective to teach reading comprehension at
The Seventh Grade Students of SMPN 11Lhokseumawe. The scopeof the research
wastofocused on reading comprehension descriptive text by using selective
highlighting strategy. The population of the research was all of the seventh grade
students of SMPN 11 Lhokseumawe, where there were five classes consisted of
112 students. In this research, the sample was taken by lottery. The researcher
took two classes as the samples, those classes VII.5 as experimental group that
consisted of 25 students and VII.4 as the control group that consisted of 24
students. Total of the students was 49. In this case, the researcher used sample
random sampling (SRS). In the experimental group, the researcher used selective
highlighting strategy in teaching reading comprehension while in the control
group the researcher used conventional method in teaching reading
comprehension. The instrument used to collect the data was test. The tests were
pre-test and post-test. After teaching learning process for four meetings the
researcher gave post-test to the students. The data were analyzed by using T-test
formula. The researcher found that the score of t-test was 2,03 while the score of
t-table on significance level 0,05 and df=47 was 1,67. It meant that t-test was
higher than t-table that was 2,03>1,67. So, based on the criterion, the researcher
concluded that the alternative hypothesis(Ha) was accepted and null hypothesis
(Ho) was rejected. It meant that using Selective Highlighting in teaching reading
comprehension to the seventh grade students of SMPN 11 Lhokseumawe was
effective.
