This thesis entitled “The Correlation between Students’ Ability in Mastering
Simple Present Tense and Their Ability in Writing Procedure Text (A
Correlational Research at MTsN 7 Aceh Utara)”. In mastering writing procedure
text, one of the basic competences that should be mastered is simple present tense.
Mastering simple present tense is very important for the students to help them in
writing procedure text. The general facts and instruction in procedure text is
written in the form of simple present tense. The purposes of this research were to
know the students’ ability in mastering simple present tense and students’ ability
in writing procedure text and also to know the correlation between the students’
ability in mastering simple present tense and their ability in writing procedure
text. The approach used in this research was quantitative approach and the kind of
this research was correlational research. This research was conducted in MTsN 7
Aceh Utara. The population in this research was all of the eighth grade students of
MTsN 7 Aceh Utara that were 120 students and samples of the research were 30
students of the eighth grade. The instrument used to collect the data was test. The
kind of test used by the researcher was multiple choice and written test. The data
was analyzed by using the correlation product moment formula to find the index
correlation score and t-test formula to test the hypothesis. The result of the
research showed that the index correlation score of this research was 0.71, and it
was the in the high degree. Besides, the researcher also found that the score of ttest was 5.35, while the score of t-table with df = 28 at significant level 0.05 was
2.04, while at significant level 0.01 was 2.76. It meant that t-test was higher than
t-table that is 2.04 < 5.35 > 2.76. So, based on the criterion, the researcher
concluded that the alternative hypothesis (Ha) of this research was accepted and
the null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected. It meant that there was significant
correlation between the students’ ability in mastering simple present tense and
their ability in writing procedure text.
