IMPROVING STUDENTS’ WRITING ABILITY THROUGH GALLERY WALK STRATEGY BY USING PHOTOGRAPHS

This thesis entitled “Improving Students’ Writing Ability through Gallery Walk
Strategy by Using Photographs”. Based on the observation that have done by the
researcher in SMPN 4 Lhokseumawe that many students had low ability in
writing, especially in developing their ideas. The students got difficult in
composing their ideas because of lack of vocabulary, lack of attention the teacher
on teaching writing, and also lack of understanding about language context, and
made them not being able to construct their written ideas well. This study is a
Collaborative Classroom Action Research. The design in this research was
qualitative. The instruments of this research are test, observation checklist for the
teacher and students. Based on the data analyzing by Winarsunu’s formula, it can
be known that the using gallery walk strategy by using photographs can improve
the students’ ability in understanding the narrative text. It was proved by the result
mean score of the cycle II better than cycle I. The mean score in the cycle I was
69 and categorized good. While the mean score for the cycle II was 86 and
categorized very good. The result of observation checklist in teachers’
performance only got 6 %, and the students’ performance got 8 %.The result of
observation checklist in cycle II of teachers’ performance got 19 % that was
increased from the cycle I and the students’ performance got 16%. In addition, the
percentage of observation checklist from students’ activities in the first cycle was
in level fair. The improvement of the students’ activities was happened in the
cycle II, that was in level very good and reached the criteria of success. The result
of the research showed of gallery walk strategy by using photographs was
effective. It gave a good effect, positive response, active, and increased the
students’ motivation in the learning English, especially in writing skill.The
students built their responded to the teacher in teaching and learning process, they
showed the good attitude and looked very relax and enjoy.
