THE COMPARISON OF READING COMPREHENSION STUDENTS’ ABILITY IN ANSWERING MULTIPLE CHOICE TEST AND ESSAY TEST ( A Comparative Study at Eight Grade Students At SMPN 4 Cot Girek )

Answering Multiple Choices Test and Essay Test at The Eight Grade Students of SMPN 4
Cot Girek”. Many students of SMPN 4 Cot Girek have lack vocabulary and reading knowledge,
so they could not answer the reading comprehension test correctly. Not all students have a good
answer in multiple choice or essay in reading comprehension test because they get the difficult
words in the test. Students of SMPN 4 Cot Girek have different way of thinking and style of
learning. So, the researcher wanted to find out the differences of reading comprehension
students’ ability in answering multiple choices test and essay test. The problem of the research, is
there any significance different between students’ ability in answering multiple choices test and
essay in reading comprehension test at SMPN 4 Cot Girek?. The objective of the research is to
know whether there is significance difference between students’ ability in answering multiple
choices and essay in reading comprehension test at SMPN 4 Cot Girek. The design of this
research was comparative study with quantitative approach. The total population of this research
are 30 students and the sample of this research are also 30 students by using purposive sampling.
The data was analyzed statistically and the research found that the mean score of multiple
choices was 68,5 and essay was 72,66. And standard deviation of multiple choices was 10,74 and
essay was 128,60. It proved that students in answering essay in reading comprehension test was
better than student in answering multiple choices in reading comprehension tests, after
calculating tha data to T-score formula, it was obtained that T-table score was 3,06. These
finding concluded that the researcher used T-table score to see how bigger or smaller than Ttable for degree freedoms on the level of significance 1,98. It can be concluded that T-score> Ttable( 3,06>1,98) and Ha was accepted while Ho is rejected the initial hypothesis of this study
stated Ha if there are different in ability between the two tests: multiple choices test and essay
test.
