AN ANALYSIS OF STUDENTS’ DIFFICULTIES IN TRANSLATING VERBAL AND NOMINAL SENTENCES FROM INDONESIAN INTO ENGLISH (A Case Study at SMPN 3 SyamtaliraAron)

This thesis is entitled “An Analysis of Students’ Difficulties in Translating
Verbal and Nominal Sentences from Indonesian into English ( A Case Study at
SMP N 3 Syamtalira Aron)”. The students of junior high school should be able to
translate Indonesian sentences into English. But the fact, the students were unable to
translate verbal and nominal sentences from Indonesian into English well. Based on
background above, the purpose of this research were to know difficulties faced by
students in translating verbal and nominal sentences from Indonesian into English
and to find out the factors of students face those difficulties in translating verbal and
nominal sentences from Indonesian into English. This research was conducted at
SMP N 3 Syamtalira Aron using case study. The subject of this research were nine
students from class VIII2 which had different level of ability which was from high
level, middle level and low level. The technique of collecting data in this research
was through observation, documentation and interview. Meanwhile, the technique of
analysis the data was using interactive model developed by Miles, Huberman and
Saldana which consist of three steps namely data reduction, data condensation and
data verification/conclusion drawing. The result of this research showed that there
were some difficulties faced by students in translating verbal and nominal sentences
from Indonesian into English, those are Lexical Problems in term of lexical meaning
and straight/denotative meaning and Syntactic Problems in term of grammatical
translation and word order. Then, the students faced those difficulties in translating
caused by some factors, those are physical factor, talent and motivation, lack of
paying attention by their parents, poor relation between teacher and students, quality
of teacher, teaching method, good facilities, associate friend and society activity.
