This thesis entitled “A Comparative Study between Marketing students And
Secretary Students’ Ability in Mastering Reading Comprehension at the Eleventh
Grade Students of SMKN 1 Lhokseumawe. Reading comprehension is an
important skill that should be mastered in English. This research was to compare
two students’ programs of SMKN 1 Lhokseumawe. Based on the observation
conducted by researcher, it was found that: first, most secretary students’ program
were difficult in remembering the vocabulary and secretary students’, they felt
difficult in giving the meaning of new words. In other hand, Marketing students
were lack in mastering the pattern of tenses found in the text, but they were better
in mastering the words. From on these differences, the researcher was interested
in comparing both programs in mastering reading comprehension. The problem is
there significant difference of achievement between Marketing Students and
Secretary Students. The researcher conducted the research at eleventh grade
students of SMKN 1 Lhokseumawe using the sample random sampling in
selecting the research sample. Percentage of population is 25% of 154 students. It
means 154 x 25% = 38,5 divided to two, it was gotten 19,25 circled be 19. The
total number of sample in this research is 38 students. Here were 19 the sample
students of Marketing Program and 19 Students of Secretary Program. The
researcher gave the test to both programs. It was presented by the difference of
mean score of both programs, Marketing’s mean score was 62.10 and the
Secretary score was 49,47. Based on the result t-score, it was 4.32 and t-table at
significant level 0.05 was 1.68. Hence, t-score > t-table (4.32 > 1.68), it could be
seen the t-score was higher than t-table. Therefore, it could be concluded that
alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted and null hypothesis (H0) was rejected. It
means that there is significant difference of achievement between Marketing
Students and Secretary Students in mastering reading comprehension at SMKN 1
Lhokseumawe.
