THE USE OF ENGLISH CHILDREN SHORT STORY TO ENRICH STUDENTS’ VOCABULARY MASTERY (A Collaborative Classroom Action Research at the Seventh Grade Students of MTsN 4 Aceh Utara)

This thesis entitled “the use of English children short story to enrich students’
vocabulary mastery (A Collaborative Classroom Action Research at the Seventh
Grade Students of MTsN 4 Aceh Utara”. The short story is the most pleasurable
of the literary genres for young people. A good story can be understood and
appreciated at many different levels. The purposes of this research were to know
how English children short story enrich students’ vocabulary mastery and also to
investigate the class atmosphere when English children short story is used in
teaching vocabulary. The approach used in this research was qualitative approach
and the kind of this research was collaborative classroom action research. This
research was conducted in MTsN 4 Aceh Utara and the subject of the research
was the seventh grade students which consist of 20 students. In achieving the
objectives of the research, the researcher used a Collaborative Classroom Action
Research procedure which involved four steps, namely planning, implementing,
observing and reflecting. There were two cycles in this research. Both cycles were
conducted in three meetings. The result of the research showed that the students’
average test score increased from the cycle I until the cycle II. In the pre-test, the
students’ average score was 54.75 and it did not meet the criteria of success.
Meanwhile, in the post-tes of cycle I, the students’ average score was 63, there
were improvement in the post-tes of cycle I but it still did not meet the criteria of
success. Furthermore, in the post-tes of cycle II, the students’ average score had
increase to be 74.5 and it meet the criteria of success. Besides, the percentages
score of both the teacher and students’ activities were improved from the cycle I
until the cycle II. In the cycle I, the percentage score for teacher’s activities were
74.28% and for students’ activities were 60.47%. It meant that in this cycle the
students’ activities was not success and did not meet the criteria of success.
Meanwhile in cycle II, the percentage score for teacher’s activities were 91.90%
and for students’ activities were 81.42%. It meant that in this cycle the students’
activities was success and meet the criteria of success.
