AN ANALYSIS OF FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE ON PERCY BYSSHE SHELLEY’S POETRIES (A Library Research)

ABSTRACT
This thesis entitled An Analysis of Figurative Language on Percy Shelley’s Poetries.
This research was a library research where date was obtained from Percy Shelley’s
Poetries: Ode to the West Wind, Ozymandias, and England in 1891; and it was from
any kind of books and relevant material. According to Abram figurative language is a
conspicuous departure from what users of a language apprehend as the standard
meaning of words, or else the standard order of words, in order to achieve some special
meaning or effect. Figures are sometimes described as primarily poetic, but they are
integral to the functioning of language and indispensable to all modes of discourse. The
objective of this research are (1) To find out figurative languages used in Percy Bysshe
Shelley’s poetry and (2) To know the meaning of figurative languages used in the
poetry. The design applied in this research was used library research by using literature
approach, in which library research is all efforts done by researcher to collage relevant
information on topic or the object of the research. The source of the data are primary
and secondary data. The technique of analyzing data are data condensation, data display
and drawing and verifying conclusions. The result of this research, the researcher found
eight types of figurative language of Ode to the West Wind, namely: Apostrophe,
Personification, Metaphor, Allusion, Similie, Discovering-symbolism, Metonymy, and
Synecdoche. In the Ozymandias was found six types of language, there are:
Synecdoche, Metaphor, Hyperbola, Allusion, Irony, and Personification. The last, in
England in 1819 was found four types of figurative language: Personification,
Metaphor, Similie, and Hyperbole. The meaning of figurative language used in poetry is
to given different meaning in word/phrase, it can obtained from condition, emotion, or
felling by the poet. In giving the meaning of word/ phrase in own figurative language it
can be subjective view depends on someone.
