ABSTRACT
This thesis entitled “An Analysis of Conversational Maxim in Higher Education
Today (Descriptive Qualitative)”. Basically, Implicature provides some explicit
account or more than what is said and it is used to convey a meaning in
conversation. In order to be understood, the speaker should follow some
principles and it is called a cooperative principle in line with conversational
maxim. By following this principle, it will help people to convey their thought
appropriately. This research explores about the conversational maxims in “Higher
Education Today” talk show. The objectives of this research are (1) to know the
types of conversational implicatures and (2) to find out any kind of violated
maxims occurring in the talk show. This research was conducted in descriptive
qualitative design by using content analysis approach. The data were taken from
the transcriptoins of video obtained from the youtube (gotouniversity channel)
with the topic of religion and sprirituality on campus. The transcriptions were
analyzed by applying Mile and Huberman, Saldana’s Model. The findings showed
that (1) there are four maxims which are adhered to in Higher Education Today,
namely maxim of quantity, maxim of quality, maxim of manner, and maxim of
relevance. Not only that, it is also found that (2) there are violations committed by
interviewees, namely violated maxim of quantity, violated maxim of manner, and
violated maxim of relevance. While violated maxim quality did not occure.
Violated maxim of quantity was the most often found in this talk show.
