THE EFFECTIVENESS OF USING KWL (KNOW, WANT, LEARN) CHART STRATEGY IN TEACHING READING COMPREHENSION

ABSTRACT
This thesis is entitled “The Effectiveness of Using KWL Chart Strategy in
Teaching Reading Comprehension (An Experimental Research at The
Eleventh Grade Students of SMKN 8 Lhokseumawe)”. The purpose of this
research is to find out the KWL Chart strategy in teaching reading
comprehension. This research is a quantitative approach. The population of this
research was the eleventh grade students of SMKN 8 Lhokseumawe. In this
research the researcher took two classes as the samples by using simple random
sampling technique and chosen by using lottery. The sample of this research were
40 students. They were class XI Analysis 1 as experimental group that consisted
of 20 students and class XI Analysis 2 as control group that consisted of 20
students. This research was conducted in four meetings. The researcher used test
as data collection technique in this research. There are twenty five questions in
multiple choices about reading comprehension( report text). Based on the result
and the hypothesis authentication and by using t-test in significant level α = 0,05,
it was obtained that ttest > ttable, it was 2,17 > 1,68. As the result, Ha was accepted
while H0 was rejected. In another word, KWL Chart Strategy was effective to the
students’ achievement in mastering reading comprehension.
