THE EFFECTIVENESS OF USING INFORMATION SEARCH METHOD IN WRITING DESCRIPTIVE TEXT (A Quasi-Experimental Research at First Year Students of MAS Ulumuddin Lhokseumawe)

This thesis entitled “The Effectiveness of Using Information Search Method in
Writing Descriptive Text (A Quasi Experimental Research at First Year
Students of MAS Ulumuddin Lhokseumawe). Based on the observation that
had done by researcher in MAS Ulumuddin Lhokseumawe that the students faced
a lot of problems in writing, especially in descriptive text, such as; first, it is
related to content of a text. Most of students got difficulties in writing because
they did not know ideas, so their writings were unknowledgeable. Second, it is
related to organization. The students have known about the organization, but they
still made many errors when they wrote a text. Furthermore, the students also had
faced the problem about vocabularies; their vocabularies were less in writing a
text. The fourth problem was language use or grammar. Moreover, they still also
made errors related to mechanics in writing. To solve the problems, the researcher
would apply a method, namely Information Search method in teaching writing
descriptive text in MAS Ulumuddin Lhokseumawe. The purpose of the research
was to find out whether there were the effectiveness of using Information Search
method in writing descriptive text or not. By using Information Search method,
the students were directed to be more autonomous with collecting and looking for
the information. This research design was a quantitative design which used
experimental research type, particularly a quasi experimental research. The
researcher took two classes as research sample from the population by using
simple random sample, lottery technique. The classes that choice were class XC as
experimental group and class XD as control group. Both of classes consisted of 35
students. In giving the treatment, the class XC was taught by using the Information
Search method, while in class XD, the researcher did not use that method, but the
researcher used the method which usually used in teaching previously, Grammar
Translation method (Traditional method). The data was collected through pre-test
and post-test score, then the researcher analyzed it by using the statistical formula,
ttest. Thus, after calculating, it was gotten the tcount = 7,005 and ttable = 1,6675. As
criteria, if tcount > ttable, so H0 was rejected and Ha was accepted. In this research
was 7,005 > 1,6675, so Ha (alternative hypothesis) was accepted and H0 (null
hyphothesis) was rejected. Therefore, the researcher concluded that using the
Information Search method in writing descriptive text at first year student in MAS
Ulumuddin Lhokseumawe was effective.
