THE EFFECTIVENESS OF USING WORD ANALOGIES METHOD TO THE STUDENTS’ VOCABULARY ACHIEVEMENT (A Quasi Experimental Research at the Eight Grade Students of SMPN 2 Syamtalira Aron)

This thesis entitled “The Effectiveness of Using Word Analogy Method in
Teaching vocabulary (A Quasi Experimental Research at the Eight Grade
Students of SMP Negeri 2 Syamtalira Aron)”. Vocabulary is one of the important
skills in learning English and basic component for interaction between two sides
in sharing ideas. Based on the researcher observation, the students of SMP Negeri
2 Syamtalira Aron had low motivation in learning English. Many of them got
difficulties to memory and understant vocabulary. The problem this research is “is
using Word Analogy method effective in teaching vocabulary to the eight grade
students of SMP Negeri 2 Syamtalira Aron?.” The purpose of this research is to
know the effectiveness of using Word Analogy method in teaching vocabulary to
the eight grade students of SMP Negeri 2 Syamtalira Aron. This result was
Experimental research with used quasi experimental design. The population of
this research was the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 2 Syamtalira Aron. The
researcher took two classes as the samples. They were 24 students from class
VIII-I as experimental group and 24 students from class VIII-II as control group.
The total sample in this research was 48 students. The data was collected through
pre test and post test and analyzed with used statistical formula t-test the
hypothesis. The researcher gave pre-test in the first meeting and post test in the
last meeting. The researcher was conducted three meetings. In the experimental
group, the researcher gave treatment by using Word Analogy method. While in
control group, the researcher only used conventional method. The result from
analyzed the data, it was shown that there were a significant different between the
experimental and control group. The students score was analyzed by using t-test
formula, based on the research result, it was obtained that, t-test >t-table, 2, 89 >
1, 68. So, t-test score was higher than the critical value of table, it means that the
research hypothesis (Ha) was accepted, while null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected.
As result, the researcher concluded that using Word Analogy method in teaching
speaking to the eight grade students of SMP Negeri 2 Syamtalira Aron was
effective.
