This thesis entitled “Teaching Auxiliary Verb by Using Planted Question
Technique (A Quasi Experimental Research on the Seventh Grade Students of
SMPN 1 Samudera Geudong)”. In mastering English, grammar becomes one of
the important parts that should be mastered by the students. By learning grammar
the students will know about system of language, so that they will be able to
combine and build words into meaningful sentence. In fact, most of the seventh
grade students got any difficulties in mastering grammar especially in mastering
auxiliary verb. Most of the students did not know each kind of auxiliary verb and
how to use them correctly. In this case, the students did not know when they
should use auxiliary verb “be” and when should use auxiliary verb “do” and
“have”. The purpose of this research was to know whether there is any significant
difference in achievement between the students who are taught auxiliary verb by
using planted question technique from those who are taught by using conventional
method. This research was experimental research and used quasi experimental
design. The population of the research was all of the seventh grade students of
SMPN 1 Samudera Geudong that were 85 students. In this research, the samples
were determined by using simple random sampling technique and chosen by using
lottery. The researcher wrote the name of each class on each paper and then took
two papers to be used as the sample. The first paper taken was used as
experimental class and the second paper taken was used as control class. Class
VII3
that consisted of 21 students was chosen as experimental group and class
VII2
that consisted of 21 students was chosen as control group. The total number
of the samples was 42 students. The instrument used to collect the data was test.
The test were pre-test and post-test. The treatment was conducted in three
meetings. The data was analyzed by using t-test formula. The researcher found
that the score of t-test was 3.47, while the score of t-table on significance level
0.05 and df=40 was 1.68. It meant that t-test was higher than t-table that is 3.47 >
1.68. So, based on the criterion, the researcher concluded that the alternative
hypothesis (Ha) of this research was accepted and the null hypothesis (Ho) was
rejected.
