This thesis entitled “Improving Students’ Writing Ability through Think Talk
Write (TTW) strategy by Using Picture Series as Media". Based on the
observation and interview that had been done by the researcher in SMPN 5
Lhokseumawe that many students had low ability in writing. and the students got
difficult in composing their ideas because of lack of vocabulary, lack of teacher’s
attention in teaching writing as a matter of fact. These issues impacted the
students enable to construct their written ideas well and so the researcher made
some questions that were; does think talk write strategy with combining picture
series as media can improve the students’ writing ability and how the students
respond to the think talk write strategy with combining picture series as media in
teaching writing. The purpose of this research are: to find out think talk write
strategy by using picture series as media improve students’ writing ability and to
know the students respond to think talk write strategy by using picture series as
media in teaching writing. This study is a Collaborative Classroom Action
Research. The design in this research was qualitative. The instruments of this
research were test, observation checklist for the teacher and students, and
questionnaire. The data from the result of tests were analyzed by using winarsunu
formula and the data from observation and questionnaire were analyzed by using
miles and huberman model of qualitative data analysis. It was proved by the result
mean score of the cycle II better than cycle I. The mean score in the cycle I was
70 and categorized good. While the mean score for the cycle II was 80 and
categorized very good. The result of observation checklist in teachers’
performance only got 4 %, and the students’ performance got 19 %. The result of
observation checklist in cycle II of teachers’ performance got 16 % that increased
from the cycle I and the students’ performance got 12%. In addition, the
percentage of observation checklist from students’ activities in the first cycle was
in level fair. The improvement of the students’ activities happened in the cycle II,
that was in level very good and reached the criteria of success. It gave a good
effect, positive response, active, and increased the students’ motivation in the
learning English, especially in writing skill.
