IMPROVING STUDENTS’ WRITING SKILL THROUGH TASK BASED LEARNING USING NARRATIVE CARTOON VIDEO (A Collaborative Classroom Action Research at the Eighth Grade Students of SMPN 12 Lhokseumawe)

This thesis entitled “Improving Students’ Writing Skill Through Task Based
Learning Using Narrative Cartoon video (A Collaborative Classroom Action
Research to the Second Year at SMPN 12 Lhokseumawe)”. Based on the
Observation that had done by the researcher in SMPN 12 Lhokseumawe that
many students had low ability in writing, especially in developing their ideas. The
students got a difficult in composing their ideas because of lack of vocabulary,
lack of attention the teacher on teaching writing, and the other problem is students
get difficulties in organizing their ideas, and made them not being able to
construct their written ideas well. This study is a collaborative classroom action
research. The design in this research was qualitative. The instruments of this
research are test, observation checklist for the teacher and students, and
questionnaire. Based on the data analyzing by Winarsunu’s formula, it can be
known that through task based learning using narrative cartoon video can improve
the students’ ability in understanding the narrative text. It was proved by the result
mean score of the cycle II better than cycle I. The mean score in the cycle I was
60 and categorized enough. While the mean score fore the cycle II was 77 and
categorized good. The result of observation checklist in teachers’ performance
only got 66 %, and the students’ performance got 62 %. The result of observation
checklist in cycle II of theachers’ performance got 84 % that was increased from
the cycle I and the students’ performance got 81 %. In addition, the percentage of
observation checklist from students’ activities in the first cycle was in level fair.
The improvement of the students’ activities was happened in the cycle II, that was
in level good and reached the criteria of success. The result of the research the use
of task based learning using narrative cartoon video was effective. It gave a good
effect, positive response, active, and increased the students’ motivation in the
learning English, especially in writing skill. The students built their responded to
the teacher in teaching and learning process, the showed the good attitude and
looked very relax and enjoy in writing.
