THE USE OF TOP DOWN PROCESSING STRATEGY IN TEACHING LISTENING COMPREHENSION (An Experimental Research at MAN 6 Aceh Utara)

The title of the research is “The Use of Top-Down Processing Strategy in Teaching Listening
Comprehension” (An Experimental Research to the Eleventh Grade Students of MAN 6 Aceh
Utara). The researcher found some problem, those are; the students had problem to
comprehend listening, most of them felt difficult in listening because of their lack of
vocabulary and grammar mastery. Second, less of students interest and motivation in learning
english. Third, the students had limited of time for speaking time in the classroom that made
them limited in listening too. Fourth, the teacher taught in uninteresting ways of teaching.
The problem of the research in this research is there any significant difference in achievement
between the students who are taught listening comprehension by using Top-Down Processing
strategy from those who are taught by using conventional method. The purpose of this
research was to know whether there is any sigfinicant difference in achievement between the
students who are taught listening comprehension by using Top-Down Processing strategy
from those who are taught by using conventional method.This research was experimental
research and used true experimental research. The population of the research was the eleventh
grade students of MAN 6 Aceh Utara that were 86 students. In this research, the researcher
took two classes of eleventh grade students as sample of the research. Those are XI IPA1 and
XI IPA2. Class XI IPA1 which consist 30 students is as experimental group and the class XI
IPA2 which also consist 30 is taken for control group. The total of sample was 60 students.
The sample selection of this research is randomly. The instrument used to collect the data was
test. The tests were pre-test and post-test. The researcher gave pre-test before treatment and
gave post-test after treatment. The treatment was conducted in three meetings. The data was
analyzed by using t-test formula. The researcher found that the score of t-test was 1,82 while
the score of t-table on significant level 0,05 and df=58 was 1,671 . It mean that t-test was
higher than t-table that is 1,82 > 1,617. As a result, the researcher concluded that the
alternative hypothesis (Ha) of this research was accepted and the null hypothesis (Ho) was
rejected.
