THE EFFECTIVENESS OF USING KEYWORD METHOD TO STUDENTS’ VOCABULARY MASTERY (An Experimental Research at the Seventh Grade Students of SMPN 5 Lhokseumawe)

This thesis was entitled “The Effectiveness of Using Keyword Method to
Students’ Vocabulary Mastery (An Experimental Research at the Seventh Grade
Students of SMPN 5 Lhokseumawe).” Based on the observation that had done by
the researcher in SMPN 5 Lhokseumawe, especially at the seventh grade, the
students were not able to remember the vocabulary given by the teacher because
of lacking of practicing the word that made them forgot it. The students felt lazy
because even though the teacher gave the best explanation possible, many
students felt that they still did not understand and were afraid to answered the
teacher’s questions. The problem of this research is “Does keyword method
significantly effect the students’ achievement in learning vocabulary?” The
purpose of the research is to describe whether learning vocabulary by using
keyword method is significantly effect the students’ achievement in learning
vocabulary. The design of this research was quasi experimental study with
quantitative approach. The total population of this research are 240 students. The
samples of this research is 50 students. They were class VII-2 as experimental
group that consisted of 25 students and class VII-4 as control group that consisted
of 25 students. Based on the result and the hypothesis authentication and by using
t-test is 4.71, then based on the value in significant level ⍺ = 0.05, degree of
freedom (df) = 48, finding the ttable is 1.67. So, the ttest > ttable it was 4.71 > 1.67.
Meanwhile, as a criteria of hypothesis, if ttest > ttable, Ho is rejected and Ha was
accepted. The score was obtained from result of calculating, it 4.71 > 1.67, the
alternative hypothesis was accepted and null hypothesis is rejected. In other
words, the researcher hypothesis is accepted. It means that there was any
effectiveness of using Keyword Method in vocabulary mastery at SMPN 5
Lhokseumawe.
