AN ANALYSIS OF EDUCATIONAL VALUES CONTAINED IN THE NOVEL ENTITLED “THREE CUPS OF TEA” (A Library Research)

This thesis is entitled “An Analysis of Educational Values Contained in the
Novel “Three Cups of Tea” by Greg Mortenson and David Oliver Relin (
Library Research). This novel told about a mountaineer named Greg Mortenson
who gets lost on the second-highest peak in the world, located in the Northern
Pakistan. Then he is taken in by the village of Korphe. There, Mortenson sees a
bunch of children with no school building and no teacher, so he vows to repay the
kindness of Haji Ali, the chief, and the other people of Korphe by building a
school. Mortenson has a big obsesion in building schools there . In this study, the
reason researchers chose the novel ’’Three Cups of Tea” was to analyze the
values of education contained in the novel. Such as the value of moral education,
the value of social education and the value of religious education. There is one
main problem to be discussed in this study, “What kinds of educational values
contained in the novel “Three Cups of Tea” ?. The purpose of the research were to
know the kinds of educational values contained in the novel “Three Cups of Tea”.
The methodology of this study is qualitative descriptive study is a research of
which the data written or oral words are descriptive analyzed. The data sources
are primary data and secondary data.The primary data is content of “Three Cups
of Tea” novel. The secondary data is taken from many kinds of books and
relevant materials such as books of literature theory, value and education. The
tehnique of analyzing data are data reduction and data display. Technique of
analyzing data is the data would be analyzed in the from of description. It means
that the researcher collected some data from the novel, that tell about education
values. The research could be erified in sense to be confirmed, revised and
repeated by the same or different way. The data conclusion would be refred to be
ilustration of the main character’s this “Three Cups of Tea” novel. The data
conclusion were classified into the moral educational values found in the novel
entitled “Three Cups of Tea” were honesty, optimistic and humility. Meanwhile,
the social educational values found in the novel were togetherness and support.
Then, the religious educational values found in the novel were pray to God and
believe in God’s protection.
